Highway traffic state estimation using speed measurements: case studies on NGSIM data and highway A20 in the Netherlands

چکیده
This paper presents two case studies where a macroscopic model-based approach for traffic state estimation, which we have recently developed, is employed and tested. The estimation methodology is developed for a “mixed” traffic scenario, where traffic is composed of both ordinary and connected vehicles. Only average speed measurements, which may be obtained from connected vehicles reports, and a minimum number (sufficient to guarantee observability) of spot sensorbased total flow measurements are utilised. In the first case study, we use NGSIM microscopic data in order to test the capability of estimating the traffic state on the basis of aggregated information retrieved from moving vehicles and considering various penetration rates of connected vehicles. In the second case study, a longer highway stretch with internal congestion is utilised, in order to test the capability of the proposed estimation scheme to produce appropriate estimates for varying traffic conditions on long stretches. In both cases the performances are satisfactory, and the obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology, both in qualitative and quantitative terms.

Performance Assessment of the 2010 HCM and Its Calibrated Model in Estimation of Weaving and Non-weaving Speed
Calibration is a conventional method which is utilized to adapt traffic models based on local situations in order to achieve best results. One of the issues regarding the efficiency of this method is whether traffic models should be calibrated only in one or two major cities of a country or calibrated based upon a comprehensive selection of cities. Therefore, this study, which has used the actu...

Road transport is a ubiquitous source of lead contamination in the soil near highways with direct and indirect impacts on human health. Accumulation of traffic-induced lead in the soils depends on gasoline lead content, traffic volume, as well as meteorological conditions. To evaluate the effect of traffic on soil lead concentration, 113 samples from the topsoil (0-15 cm) were collected in a re...

The purpose of this study was to investigate traffic flow characteristics at off-ramp junctions in Iranian expressways. The study was conducted on the traffic behavior in isolated off-ramp vicinity of 6-lane expressways. The database consisted of traffic flow and traffic speed information extracted from videotapes. The relationship between diverging traffic flow in the right lane of expressway ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Methods for Computing Free-Flow Speed and Its Significance in the HCM 2010; Case Study: A Ramp-Weaving Segment
The core methodology of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) 2010 for freeway analyses is based on Free-Flow Speed (FFS). Moreover, weaving segments are major elements of freeway facilities that form where two one-way traffic streams intersect by merging and diverging maneuvers. Hence, this study used three different methods to compute FFS of a ramp-weaving segment, and then employed the proposed ...
